Released October of last year, John Grisham's book "Rogue Lawyer" has more characters and story-lines then a politician has lies, does the story work?
Lawyer Sebastian Rudd is a defense attorney who takes cases other lawyers shy away from. In this novel he defends an accused satanist of viciously killing and raping two very young girls, a man shooting at a cops, an alleged kidnapper who may be involved in the killing, raping and sex trafficking of a young woman, a cage fighter who beats a referee to death and a known porn and drug trafficking gangster, George Scanlon, aka Link Scanlon. George is more frequently known as Link because of all the crimes he is linked to.
Some of his clients are guilty of the crimes they are accused of and some of them are innocent, and Rudd does not win every case, but more often then not, he is the victor in court which puts his elementary school age son in danger as well as himself.
Rudd and his Partner, also named Partner work out of Rudd's customized bullet proof van, complete with a full bar and office. Cops and many other citizens of the world often try and kill Rudd for defending his questionable clientele. Rudd and Partner are proud to still be alive from all the times various people have tried to kill both of them.
"We're proud to still be standing or ducking," Rudd has been quoted as saying.
One of the many side story's in this novel is about a married couple in their 70s who fall victim to the 'dark web,' web sites Google and Yahoo will not harbor. The couples 19-year-old neighbor uses their web link to sell massive amounts of drugs on line, primarily ecstasy. At 3 a.m. one morning, an eight man SWAT team breaks down the elderly couples door, kills both of their aging non threatening dogs and the mans wife, the aging man shoots a cop in the neck and is now facing 20 years to life for almost killing a cop.
"Rogue Lawyer" is three and a half star read, primarily because it seizes the attention of the reader and is definitely not predicable. The novel could have been a four or perhaps a five star read, but their was simply too many characters and sub plots.
