Library Lunatic Reads

"The Stranger" first hit the public in March of last year and immediately snares the readers attention and engages the senses with mystery and intrigue.

This book integrates family life with grand theft, murder, blackmail and prostitution, then belts the reader hard with its ending. New York Times best selling author Harlan Coben first seized my attention with "Deal Breaker," the first in the series of the fictional phenomenal character Myron Bolitar. In "Deal Breaker," one of the laughing moments for me was when a former female wrestler, Esperanza Diaz was a member of FLOW, Fabulous Ladies Of Wrestling. Originally these lady wrestlers were to be known as the Beautiful Ladies Of Wrestling, but the acronym BLOW didn't seem right.

"The Stranger" is not as entertaining as the Bolitar series, but it works extremely well and at less the 390 pages in large print, it's an afternoon read. The story gets going right away when the main character Adam Price is approached by a complete stranger who tells Adam disturbing secrets about his wife Corinne then vanishes out of his life.

When a massive amount of money turns up missing from the lacrosse league treasury, Tripp Evans, the president of the lacrosse league becomes a pivotal character in the story and the wild plot of "The Stranger" becomes a whirl wind of what in the wide world of sports is going on. Cold blooded murder is justified and acceptable in rare cases, or is it? Read the book and judge for yourself.

Mindless Venting

Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives John Lennon said and I agree.

Infinite power at play, infinite power gone wild, stripped of creativity and thrust into modern day slavery known as a job, a thankless job with poverty wages while nine digit numbers (xxx-xx-xxxx), aka humans feed the nefarious one percent.

The lucky numbers die of old age with a body ashed by fire, then spread across the seas and joined by an eternal spirit that knows only pleasure, music, love and laughter; everything the opposite of life on Earth.

Dreams of eternity where money is obsolete, youth and beauty  pulverize the damnable one percent and every child is safe. (Fate is as cold as ice, why are little ones born only to suffer?; Neal Peart.)

"I don't have pet peeves, I have major psychotic F****** hatreds," George Carlin said.

The above phrase suits me fine.

If big money and world leaders had soul, all transportation would be electric and solar, and not a single person on Earth would go hungry http://articles.latimes.com/2008/jun/23/opinion/ed-food23, unless they were anorexic. (forschurr.blogspot.com; July 11, 2013, "There is A Solution To World Hunger.") Housing and higher education would not be insanely priced, wars would be a thing of the distant past and nuclear weapons would only be used to stop potential asteroids from colliding with the Earth.

Shifting through the sands of uncertainty has lead me on a path of mystery and the hapless reality of greedy governments destroying everything good and making life almost pointless. The dreams of youth are the regrets of maturity and when death finally arrives, delicious dreams may forever shroud evil and begot a world with no leaders or followers.

Now that I'm done venting I can move on to my next abomination and watch tonight's preview of the NBA western conference finals between the San Antonio Spurs and the Golden State Warriors.

State of the Union, or State of Confusion?

Democracy breaks down when the average person feels their voice doesn't matter, that the system is rigged for the rich, accept change is not possible, believe politics are hopeless, and feel the folks elected don't care, President Barack Obama said in the State of the Union Address on Tuesday.

The above words definitely reflect how I feel about politics. World leaders certainly care little about the average working soul, because if they did, everyone who works full time would be able to afford a house. Yes, I understand, a minimum wage worker wouldn't be purchasing a five bedroom house with ten acres of land on beach front property, but even the lowest of income earners working full time should be able to live on their own without needing a second or even third income from a spouse or roommates.

If 100 percent of the people executed my plan of attack on the government, the world would be a much better place. What if everybody, including myself stopped driving, ceased paying over the top electrical bills, rent, mortgage, and all the middle class banded together with the poor in every neighborhood and community in the world, produced our own food via gardens and farming.

On a small scale, imagine if all vehicle owners ceased driving at the same time and had the means to fend for ourselves from what I said above. The powers that be would have no choice, but to make all vehicles solar and electrical, thus ending all ties with the Middle East and sending sending American children to die in the sands across the seas. What if? I certainly am not going to stop going to work and driving, because everybody who owns a vehicle in the world would have to do the same, and that's not going to happen; how much can one person really do?

We the people are simply trapped in the governments web of lies and false fears. The president, Obama bragged about how strong the U.S. military is. Obama said in his State of the Union Address, that our government spends more money then the next eight countries combined on our military. In an ideal world, the president would be bragging about how a college education is incredibly affordable and world peace is a reality. This is sadly not the case. World leaders in every country brain wash its media into believing war is necessary and thus making it OK to send other peoples children to die on foreign soils.

How do we keep America safe without becoming its police? This was one question the president asked with no answer. The world has been an unsafe place forever. Cain killing his  brother Abel when there was only four people on the planet for example. U.S. currency bears the words, 'In God We Trust'. I worry about being killed by a terrorist as much as I do by a zombie. Relax people, the statistics are true, as learned in a college class in 2011, a person has more a chance of killing themselves, then being murdered.

Farewell Alondra, Second Revision From January, 2014

Shrouded in doubt and caught in an onslaught of wondrous despair, left to ponder why for the rest of my life.

Death can claim anyone at anytime, but it cannot wash away marvelous memories of laughter and love. Currently, we the living know not for sure where Alondra dwells, be it the garden of Allah, the Viking Valhalla, or the many other places and names for paradise. I personally hope Alondra is in Hindu heaven, my mom and dad as well.

There will be eating and drinking of heavenly food and drink, reunion with father, mother, sons & daughters...delights of love, eternal light, cooling breezes, swift refreshing waters...music, honey and wine. There will be no rich nor poor, neither powerful or oppressed, no sickness, old age or deformity of any kind. The joys of the blest (Alondra) will be a hundred times greater than the highest bliss on Earth. So much is allotted to the righteous dead. AV, 4,34-5-6, the book of Hinduism.

Ali, for all intensive purposes was my step daughter from the time she was about 3 and a half-years-old -years till she was six. I remember the day like it was yesterday when Ali, her neighbor Randi and Randi's younger sister Michaela were with me at the apartment swimming pool early one Saturday afternoon. One of the neighbors asked the girls to quiet down. Really? At 1 p.m., maybe 2 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, your asking three adorable preschool aged children to play quietly at the pool on a glorious summer day? Petty stuff indeed.

Alondra's friends Randi and Michaela with their brother Nathan

Dozens of times over an entire summer I was blessed to witness little Ali Bear and her two next door pals laughing and having fun at the tenant swimming pool while listening to Oakland Athletics game on my little blue AM sports radio. Just added to my bucket list, a video camera rolling as me and several little girls are in front of the camera and doing nothing but laughing hysterically.

From the years 2000-2004 I was a preschool teacher at the YWCA preschool, A Special Place. Three months before Ali was 3-years-old, she joined our school. Before she turned 4-years-old she was one of eight children in my group of kids; 'The Brown Bears.' Her smile back then was just as infectious from the above photos. Those four years changed my life forever with an indelible sense of innocence, love, laughter and sorrow.

One specific moment from working at A Children's Place has embedded itself in my memory bank. During free play outside, Ali was one of the children seated in the large sand pit with several other children. I was kicking a soccer ball straight up in the air as high as I could and catching it, or at least trying to. One of my kicks was way out of range of catching the ball, but still very high in the air. The soccer ball hit Ali square on the top of the head.

Instead of tears and maybe a bruise on the head, which I expected, she just turned around mildly surprised as if someone had gently tapped her on the shoulder. When I apologized to her, she nonchalantly smiled and continued to play with the other children.

Taking Ali and her friend's to the swimming pool at the then apartment complex was always a joy. Laughing preschool eyes and joyous shouts of gratification as she and her friend's constantly got out of the pool to jump back in again always put a smile on my face.

I dated Ali's mother Debby for about a year and half, thus I got to spent a lot of time with Ali. From the time Ali was 3-6-years-old I was a regular in her life. To this day, Debby and I are still friends. I helped Debby and her husband move to Nevada. I just wish I would have visited Debby and Joe a lot more than I did. When Ali was 12-years-old I spent about a month at Debby and Joe's house.

While at Debby and Joe's during that time, I reminded myself as "The Thing That Wouldn't Leave," a 70s Saturday Night Live skit in which John Belushi, portrayed a single man at a married couples house who refused to take a hint and over stayed his welcome.

Debby and Joe seemed to tolerate my presence very well, even capitalizing on it by taking a couple weekend trips to Reno, Nev. leaving me with the kids. Debby's son William was in high school at the time, so he required little if any supervision. Ali and I spent lots of nights watching kid movies including "Matilda," "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants", the Harry Potter movies, and several other young adult flicks.

The most fun I had with Ali at that time was letting her drive Irene, (my green Saturn Vue) in the desert of Fernley, Nev. She was a great driver for any age, let alone being a 12-year-old. Obviously Joe must have taken her out on a lot of drives himself.

Ali gave me one good scare when she got to the top of a steep hill and she had to make a Y-turn because the path was too narrow for a U-turn. As Ali was making the Y-turn, she started to panic and said where going to go off the edge, and I thought the same for a brief moment. Inside I was panicked, but outwardly I was calm and told her to brake, (she did) and put the car in reverse. With my sagacious coaching, she made an excellent Y-turn which had little room for error. An error may have sent us both off the steep hill.

Initially when I drove off with Ali and the family dog, Debby gave strict orders  to not allow Alondra to drive. Ali told on herself when we got back, and Debby gave me an ear full, and I assured Debby that Ali drove great. Debby said Ali scares her when she drives.

"Mark doesn't freak out and yell at me like you do mom when I'm driving," Alondra said to her mom.

My life is a lot emptier with Alondra's untimely death on this day in 2014. The passing of my father, also on January 7, but in 2013 also shrouded my soul with gloom and tears, but with his death it was easier to embrace life again. My dad was 90-years-old and the night he died, he was in his bed surrounded by most of his children, grandchildren, two of his great grand children and some very loving in laws.

I can't even phantom what Debby is going through. My life is empty right now because of the few years I got to laugh with Ali. Now and forever just as the loss of my parents, Ali's absence without return has thrust an emptiness in my heart that will never return. Alondra's departure from Earth is a lot more painful to me than the absence of my parents. My parents got the full taste of life on this planet, they loved both emotionally and physically, they got to see at least some or their great grandchildren becoming adults.

The 7th of this month will always be dark for me, yet seeds of laughter via memories put a smile toward the tears, missing you Ali...

NFL Playoff Teams Gearing Up for Super Bowl 50

Only 12 of the 32 NFL teams remain in contention for Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara on February 7.
The AFC West champions, the Denver Bronco's, the AFC Eastern champs, the New England Patriots, the NFC Western winners, the Phoenix Cardinals and the NFC South champions, the Carolina Panthers with the best record at 15-1 clinched first round playoff byes.

Professional football, unlike baseball, basketball and hockey has no best of five or seven game series in the post season, it's one and done, lose, go home, win, move on.

The teams with the best chance to get the coveted 50th Super Bowl trophy, in my mind are the Seahawks, Panthers, Cardinals or the Chiefs.

The drive to this years Super Bowl begins Saturday with the American Football Conference teams battling it out.

The first playoff game this year will feature the Houston Texans hosting the Kansas City Chiefs. USA Today Sports has the Chiefs as four point favorites on the road against the Texans. Way back in September on opening day, the Texans lost to the Chiefs 27-20 at home. Based on that, and the point spread, this should be a down to the wire nail bitter.

(all point spreads are based on yesterday's USA Today Sports postings.)

The Chiefs are the hottest team in the NFL right now. Since starting the season at 1-5, the team has the longest winning streak in football right now with a current 10 game winning streak. If the Chiefs get past Houston, then win their next two playoff games to get to the Super Bowl, the owners of the San Francisco 49ers are really going to look stupid, much like the bone-headed general management moves of the Oakland Raiders and Oakland Athletics of recent history.

The Chiefs quarter back Alex Smith is the real deal, although not flashy like his former bench warming team-mate Colin Kaepernick, Smith runs smart, and throws the ball out of bounds rather than a risky interception pass in the red zone, much like Joe Montana used to do. Smith has all the components necessary to lead a football team. Although not charismatically athletic as the likes of the Panthers leader Cam Newton, Smith often darts several yards for a key first down on third down plays with his feet, or he can thread the needle with a pin point pass to one of his receivers whose double covered.

Much like the Chiefs opening day seven point win against the Texans, I predict another close win by the Chiefs this Saturday. Saturdays second playoff game is a coin toss, even the odds makers have the game even, in other words, no team is favored to win, no matter what team a better bets on, no points are given or taken away for either team; pickem.'

Division foes, the Steelers will go on the road against the Bengals. The two teams split their regular season mach-ups this year at 1-1. Both teams beat each other on the road, with that being said, the Steelers have the edge this Saturday.

On paper, this Saturday's match-up between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals is must see reality TV moment. This game I believe will come down to the basics, the team that can run or stop the run on defense for the most part will emerge to play again on the weekend of the 16th or 17th. Both the Steelers and Bengals have star receivers and quarterbacks. Steel town with Big Ben Roethlisberger hurling to Antonio Brown for the winning touchdown or 'C' city's Andy Dalton to A.J. Green for the victorious TD?

The first of the two playoff games on Sunday is between the Minnesota Vikings hosting the red hot Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks smoked the Vikings in the regular season 38-7 in Minnesota on December 6, and the seven point favored Seahawks should win easily this weekend. The Seahawks ended the regular season with a 6-1 mark including a 36-6 bombastic win over their division foes, the Phoenix Cardinals on January 3.

The last of the four playoff games this weekend is between the Washington Redskins and the Green Bay Packers. This is another toss a coin to predict the winner. The hosting Redskins are a whopping two point favorite to win this week ends math-up. Both teams have the potential to run the table and seize the Super Bowl.

The Packers with their 10-6 record where often dominate in their wins, yet mostly pathetic in their losses. Which team will appear this weekend? Their NFC Eastern 9-7 champions are equally unpredictable. When the Redskin defense is lights out with their run stopping ability and at the same time quarterback kirk Cousins gets hot with his leading TD receiver Jordan Reed, it seems no team can compete with them.

Sunday's game in Washington will be another must see sporting moment, because the game may go to double overtime.

Currently, I see this years Super Bowl being the Panthers playing the Chiefs or Seattle playing the Chiefs.

She is...

                                      Her

Standing amidst the chaos of pelting rain, crashing
waves and ocean winds, all I could see was 'her
                                    face.'
Mesmerized by her smile, fixated by her laugh,
                                    drawn to her every word.
Her heart felt wisdom saturates my mind with love,
lust laughter. Indeed she is the true definition of the
word lady. Lady; Classy, smart, sensuous, soulful,
sweet, and sincere.
Harbored in my dreams and embedded in my soul
dwells her. Luscious lady who awakes delicious
desires…                                                          Izzy Schurr
