"Joan Blondell, A Life Between Takes," Another Modern Moron Book Review

Beautiful you are when you can see a child’s point of view and optimism is your warmth, there is beauty in getting up after a fall and breaking someone else’s, when you catch another eye in understanding, it’s beautiful. A stomach that cannot handle injustice and intolerance is a stomach stretched in childbirth, and it’s beautiful Joan Blondell said.

Love, and a little murder are timeless subjects in the movies, and Joan Blondell’s movie career spanned for five decades, including 1927s silent movie, “Wings,” to 1977s, “Star Wars,” Matthew Kennedy said in his 2007 book, “Joan Blondell, A Life Between Takes.” She appeared in at least 100 movies.

Blondell’s, starring role in “Gold Diggers of 1933,” showcased her acting skills along with her luscious figure and real-life Betty Boobish face.

Joan Blondell in ""Gold Diggers of 1933"

In 1931s, “Other Men’s Women,” Blondell’s cameo appearance as the waitress Marie was the best scene in the movie because she said she was APO to a certain man.

Marie (Blondell)

That’s right, I’m APO. Ain’t Putn’ Out!

From 1930-1934, Hollywood was in its so-called pre-code era, and Blondell was still in her 20s establishing her talents and arousing the pleasures, we lightly call physical.

Before she was 30-years-old, Joan Blondell was supporting her parents and her younger brother and sister during The Great Depression of the 1930s.

Joan Blondell was sentimental without being sappy and naughty without being cheap, and 1941s “Topper Returns” is a comedy that still makes me laugh out loud. Blondell is Gail in ‘Topper Returns” and she is murdered in a mansion, and her ghost helps solve her own murder in a bizarre and funny manner.

Blondell starred in the sex comedy, “Convention City.” The movie hit the masses in December 1933, and sometime in 1934, prints of “Convention City,” including the original was destroyed on the order of Jack L. Warner, who ran the studio at the time. The movie was deemed too racy for the mainstream media. To this day, “Convention City,” is one of the most sought after lost movies from the Hollywood archives. In the 1960s, Blondell owned a 16mm print of the film, and said she screened the movie in her house for various guests and joked that the movie was basically soft-core porn for its day.

“I’m a staunch lover in every sense of the word. I love people, husbands, children, grandchildren and dogs. I’m a great appreciator of the good things, the veins in the leaf of a tree, roses, the look of morning and the smell of babies. I try to forget the bad things,” Blondell said.

Blondell was married three times and had two daughters. In 1972, she was spending $150.00 a week on books. She read voraciously on all subjects, thus fueling my appreciation for her even more.

One of her daughters had a history of schizophrenia, suicidal tendencies and a bout with manic depression.

“There’s a lump inside you always, lumps of sorrows, griefs and failures, but with a little effort you can make them stay in the background,” Blondell said.

Three and a half stars for the book, “Joan Blondell, A Life Between Takes,” by Matthew Kennedy.

"Black is the New White," Another Modern Moron Review

“I don’t believe in racial neutrality, it’s always a lie,” writer / comedian, Paul Mooney said.

Paul Mooney’s 2010 book, “Black is the New White,” details the subtle differences in black and white people with a truly whimsical style.

Mooney wrote the 1970s classic “Saturday Night Live” skit between Chevy Chase and Richard Pryor, in which Chevy Case called Pryor the N-word to his face on regular TV, and it worked hilariously because of Mooney’s sagacious writing style.

Human salvation lies in the hands of the creativity maladjusted Mooney said. Mooney’s many writing endeavors include being a full-time writer for Richard Pryor, “Sanford and Son,” “Chappelle’s Show,” and much more.

Mooney wrote the “Negrodamus” skits for “Chapple’s Show.” Mooney portrayed Negrodamus instead of Nostradamus.

“Black is the New White” details how addictions conquer a person decades before their time of death. Mooney not only wrote for Richard Pryor, but he was also his friend.

In the 1960s, and 70s, booze, cocaine and pussy were Pryor’s three food groups, Mooney said. Mooney was always the designed driver when himself, Pryor and others would chaotically carouse in the city of Los Angeles. Mooney said he often felt like he was the only one in LA in the 60s and 70s who wasn’t high. Mooney occasionally imbibed adult beverages, but cocaine and all the hard drugs were simple not for him.

“Mooney don’t do none of this (cocaine) shit, he’s cool, I get’s Mooney’s share, more for me.” Pryor says this again and again during the whole time Mooney knew him.

Mooney said Pryor was making $50,000 a year in 1969 and spending a $100,000 on cocaine.

Mooney honestly believed something deep in the root of Richard Pryor’s soul was bothering him. Pryor co-wrote the screen-play of “Blazing Saddles,” with Mel Brooks and three other writers. Pryor was also going to portray the black sheriff in the movie, but Brooks didn’t like Pryor’s reputation for showing up to the Hollywood sets under the influence of booze and or drugs. For more details, read “Black is the New White.”

“I didn’t love Richard Pryor for his comic genius, and I didn’t hate him for being a degenerate drug user. I loved him because he’s Richard.

Paul Mooney and Richard Pryor

Mooney said Pryor was depressed, even during the worldwide release of “Brewster’s Millions.” Mooney was baffled that Pryor still wasn’t happy. John Candy, who also starred in “Brewster’s Millions,” was not well received by Mooney to say the least. Read the book for more details.

Mooney said Richard Pryor loved doing stand-up comedy with little or even no written material. Pryor had the ability to feed off his audiences and counter hecklers, he enjoyed the risks and rewards of performing on the cuff.

Mooney also considered comedian George Carlin to be a genius, but unlike Pryor, Carlin relied on his well scripted timing, and it worked! Mooney said.

Gossip hungry souls would be intrigued how Mooney lost his virginity. Indeed, wild stuff. Read ‘Black is the New White” for the lascivious details.

I love Mooney’s insight on religion; ‘Those who stick a knife in the innocent souls of children will burn in hell,” he said.

Mooney and Redd Foxx had some potent words for the mistreatment of black writers and performers in Hollywood, and yes, for more details, you know what to do.

The Black Pack, Arsenio Hall, Mooney, Eddie Murphy, Robert Townsend and Keenan Ivory Wayans

Whether I was teaching English to fourth graders, middle schoolers, high schoolers or college students, “Black is the New White,” would be a required read for my students. Four and a half stars for this enlightening book.

Seventy-nine-year-old, Paul Mooney died of a heart attack on May 19, and yes, his comedy and his wisdom will be missed. I agree that Mooney was the ‘Godfather’ of modern black comedy.

Modern Moron Book Reviews

“I can’t explain myself, I’m afraid sir, because I’m not myself you see.” Alice said.
(Lewis Carrol)

The forest breathed above her when she found almost two dozen severed heads, including her father’s head upside down with his king’s crown stuck in the ground. Winding tendrils of guilt, and the flickering blackness of her suffering was invisible to the naked eye, twas a dark night with dark thoughts. (Colleen Oakes)

Colleen Oakes, the author, of the “Queen of Hearts” book trilogies weaves the details of the plot with a moksha style in her writing prowess. Oakes completely changed Lewis Carrol’s, 1865 book, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” to say the least.

Many Wonderlanders with power will stop at nothing to ensure princess Dinah does not assume control of Wonderland, while others are eager for Dinah to be the leader of Wonderland. The Yurkei’s with highly trained warriors are thrust into battle with Morte, the Black Devil and his cast of mortal warriors.

Dinah, and her lover Wardley are forced to journey south, to the Darklands, a place of untold horrors, where it’s kill or be killed.

The “Queen of ” trilogy of books are a well-mixed cocktail of love and combat fought with ancient weaponry.

“The Queen of Hearts,” and “Blood of Wonderland,” are the first two books in Oakes trilogy of fascinating fantasy. I have yet to read the third book, “War of the Cards.” The first two books are three and a half star reads in my view.

Modern Moron Review, "Real Time with Bill Maher"

A mod, Trump supporters with a lust for blood stormed the U.S. capital on January 6, and spread feces on Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi’s office walls, and when you’re communicating in feces, you’re at a level without rational thinking Bill Maher said.

CNN’s Paul Begala pointed out that a republican senator from Georgia refused to shake the hand of a police officer who defended the capital on January 6.

CNN's Paul Begala and New York Times pod caster, Jane Coaston

Maher talked briefly about how Fox TV host, Tucker Carlson said the insurrection on Jan. 6 was done by the FBI. First it was Antifa posing as Trumpeters, now it’s the FBI, and worshippers of the insane Orangemen will feed into this absolute balderdash.

“I’m not worried about Al-Qaeda, I’m worried about You All-cada,” Paul Begala, a CNN commentator said on Friday nights “Real Time with Bill Maher.”

Jane Coaston, a New York Times pod cast host had some good riffs on the stupidity of Trumpeters as well.

Maher and Coaston agreed with the Republicans on some of their issues, which confirmed to me, this show is truly opened minded, and simply mirrors what’s going on in the news world without catering to Tweeter feeds, which Trump and his Maga Morons thrive on. President Joe Biden doesn’t even have a Tweeter account.

It’s not foreigners, it’s pissed off Americans that are the problem now, Maher said.

The latest episode also had some hard-hitting facts on California regulations, and its far too many political loop-holes for major business’s such as Coca-Cola.

The drought in California was also discussed on Friday night’s show, and how to curtail much of it.

Maher’s opening monologue was funny, and even made fun of the democrats. Maher talked about the summit with President Joe Biden and Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

“There is no happiness in life, only a mirage of it on the horizon,” Putin said at the summit.

Bill Maher said it was nice to have a U.S. president siding with America.

Maher’s New Year’s Eve show in Hawaii on December 30 will also have comedian Nikki Glaser who was his opening guest on Friday night, and she is funny.

A Glimpse of the Silver Surfer

He is the Silver Surfer, a glistening study in grace and skill who surges across the cosmos in an infinite quest for sanity, tranquility, justice and romance. (“Silver Surfer, Epic Collection” / me)

The pure and polluted passions of human desires lead to the gnawing pain of tragedy and the exquisite ecstasy of tangible love and laughter. He journeys across the universe to the borderland between eternity and oblivion.

The thunder of ancient universes dying and birthed anew vibrate through him as he rides the quantum waves over creation.  (“Silver Surfer, Epic Collection”)

All the differences between the two genders, races, cultures and philosophies drift in the doorways of reality and the unseen energies enveloped in the forces of love and conflict.

When I read Silver Surfer comic books, I enter an unknown realm of imagination and realism. My hopes and joys gleefully joust with my sorrows and emptiness. My heart and mind are swallowed in a timeless realm of creative chaos.

Know Peace, Practice Peace, Clues From the Ancients

Everybody finding the peace will make things a lot more confident.

Earlier this week in Utah, a Filipino Yum Yum food truck was vandalized inside and out, and laden with hateful drawings and anti-Asian graffiti. Utah Jazz, point guard Jordan Clarkson donated a substantial sum of money to the owners of the Yum Yum food truck to get it fully repaired and running again.

“This is bull-s---, there’s no room for that. Its been tough years for this Earth, this country and this world. I feel like us together and everyone finding the peace will make things a lot more confident. In this world we ain’t got room for the hate no more. its got to go out the window real quick,” Clarkson said.
